The DMC World DJ Championships 2008 are being held on Friday 26th and Saturday 27th September at IndigO2 in London. International heats are taking place now, across the globe, and if the UK competition was anything to go by, once again standards have been ramped up a notch this year.

This year's UK heats are done and dusted; the finalists travelled to Islington Academy on 17th July for the DMC UK DJ Championships and after a hard fought competition, DJ Skully was crowned the winner. Placing first in the competition means Skully is now set to represent UK turntablism in the solo DJ category and will compete against the cream of the global DJ crop at this year's competition.

Representing the UK in the Battle for Supremacy - a head to head scratch battle of wits, techniques and braggadocious ability - is DJ Switch. This young turntable wizard has stood up to the competition and emerged victorious for 3 years in a row now, retaining his dextrous deck dominance since 2006. Needless to say we're expecting big things from him this September!

The World finals mark the culmination of months of fierce competition in countries across the world including Japan, USA, Australia, Canada, across the whole of Europe and all the way out to China, Brazil and even Bulgaria - the winner here in September is the best of the best, period.

The Championships have been running for 24 years now and have helped launch the careers of a galaxy of stars from the DJ world ranging from early winners like the UK's Scratch Perverts, Plus One and Cutmaster Swift to legends like Q-Bert, C2C (4 x DMC World Team Champions), DJ Ca$h Money and Beastie Boys DJ Mixmaster Mike through to new names like DJ Craze, DJ Netik and last year's German winner Rafik who played showcase sets at all the UK Heats.

This year's event is hosted by DMC favourites' MC Trip, Killa Kela, and Billy Biznizz. MC Trip was awarded the Time Out accolade of 'Best Live Show of 2004'. He is explosive on stage and is Killa Kela's official MC/right hand man. To date he's shared the stage with Busta Rhymes, Outkast and N.E.R.D.

DMC TV - DMC UK DJ Champs 2008 - London Heat

http://www.dmcdjchamps.com/dmctv.asp?vid=9

Well there you have it, the DMC UK regional championships is over for another year! DMC headed off to London on Saturday 21st June for the final heat of the tour! DMC were pleased to team up with Urban Nerd for our final event, and what an event it was! Great crowd, great show! What more could you ask for?

DMC would like to thank everyone at Urban Nerd for a fantastic event!

As well as the DMC London heat on the night Urban Nerds put on a fantastic line up which included: Legend - Goldie! The Newham Generals, Rattus Rattus and many more! Plus DMC World Champion DJ Rafik and DJ Blakey who was out celebrating his birthday!

After running a very smooth sailing elimination the following 8 contestants provided the evening's entertainment in the following order: Spats, Hostile, Special Guest, Disect, Buckwilde, TGK, Johnny 1 Move & Furious P.

Without doubt this one of the closest heats which resulted with just a point difference between its top three competitors: 1st was a very consistent Furious P who placed 3rd previously in Birmingham, his London performance felt more mature and dynamic!

Second was awarded to a very talented Disect, after delivering some energetic scratch manipulations using various synth's and vocal samples!

Third place went to Johnny 1 move, again in my opinion showing plenty of future potential. Johnny delivered very fast clean scratches and his turntable drumming impressed me the most!

Furious P will now join Pandamonium, Loop Skywalker, Skully, Switch, Jeppa, and Asian Hawk and Rasp (who came second at two heats) at the UK Final on Thursday 17th July...

DMC TV - DMC UK DJ Champs 2008 - Bournemouth Heat

http://www.dmcdjchamps.com/dmctv.asp?vid=8

The DMC team headed down to Bournemouth for their South West Coast heat on Friday 13th June and had a stormer of an evening. The event was hosted in the Crank Club and with 8 competitors qualifying; they competed in the following running order; Nicki T, Foly, Weetamix, TGK, Jeppa, Captain Wang, Buckwilde & Asian Hawk.

With a full six minutes play time for each DJ, the competition threw up a massively unexpected twist which resulted in a consistent Jeppa placing 1st. "Jeppa's arrangement was the most fluent on the night & his scratches sat tightly throughout his mix which ended with a bass & synth scratch being manipulated!"

After placing second in the Birmingham heat, Asian Hawk returned to Bournemouth to perform his killer set to the energetic crowd. Once again, he took second place behind Jeppa and TGK was awarded third place with just 1 point separating him from Captain Wang who claimed 3rd Place at the Manchester heat.

Clips of all the evenings competitors as well as previous heats are available for viewing through our brand new DMC TV portal, Enjoy!

http://www.dmcdjchamps.com/audio.asp?vid=1

Champs Audio - The DMC World Championships may have officially started in 1986, but if we go back a year to 1985, DMC's first ever DJ competition was the DMC Technics International Mixing Championships at The Hippodrome in London. An all European affair that saw the UK's Roger Johnson take the title at what was at the time London's largest nightclub. Back then, the DJs focussed on their mixing ability with the rare venture into the hip hop style of scratch mixing, what today we call the world of Turntablism. Roger was awarded the DMC Champion bomber jacket, the DMC Gold 7" Trophy and a VIP trip to New York. Since this was the Championships in it's infancy, there isn't any video or audio recordings of Roger's set, but there is a radio studio performance available which should give you an idea of the music, scratch and mixing level back in the day.

DMC Champs Audio - DJ Cheese - DMC Champion - 1986

http://www.dmcdjchamps.com/audio.asp?vid=2

Champs Audio - Whilst most of his international opponents once again concentrated on their mixing abilities, it was left to New Jersey's DJ Cheese to exhibit the full extent of hip hop DJing which was then known as scratch mixing. There were a bold few who tried this new style of DJing but it was only DJ Cheese who could bring the full, raw street style of intense, rhythmical scratches and dynamic cutbacks that is the blueprint of today. Like many hip hop bedroom DJs, we all rooted for Cheese as he was undoubtedly our ambassador and his victory gave all the unrecognised and unacknowledged DJs out there the first opportunity to step and up be counted.
