DJ Honda

He is a Japanese icon. The artist who turned his back on rock music to hit the studio and DJ booth with electrifying results. From collaborations with De La Soul and KRS-1 to hook ups with Afrika Bambaataa and Universal Zulu Nation. And in Tokyo we will honour him…

What were your early days in NYC like after moving from Japan?

Moving to America was a huge turning point. Everything—the city, the culture—was completely unknown. When I arrived in New York, I had no connections and no clear path. I stayed busy making beats every day in my home studio and kept grinding. It was tough, but it was real. I had to earn my place on my own.

When did DMC first come onto your radar?

I first learned about DMC in the late ’80s. I was blown away by VHS tapes of DJ Cash Money and DJ Aladdin. It wasn’t just mixing; it was serious competition. I remember thinking, “One day, I have to get on that stage.”

What did it feel like to compete in the Battle for World Supremacy?

That battle gave me the confidence and respect to believe I could compete on the world stage. I still remember my semifinal against Roc Raida (R.I.P.) and the final with Mix Master Mike. That was the first big door that opened for me.

A song you wish you had written?

‘Purple Haze’ by Jimi Hendrix. That sound and impact never left me. When I was young, I only cared about music. I was playing guitar, listening, and just obsessed with creating sound.
